From The Outside In
A collection of works from artist Helen Wiese.
Growing up in country NSW and now living in Sydney with her family, Helen is greatly influenced by her everyday urban environment and particularly her life experiences on the land.
A bit of a self-confessed gatherer, she has a sense of nostalgia for collecting bits and pieces around the farm sheds, now weathered, worn and forgotten, and creating a new lease of life for them within her work. Objects such as patterns, sticks, shearing blades, mesh, wheat bag pins all find a way of taking on form and direction in her works.
Painting is a very personal and tactile experience for her. She loves to roll a canvas out on her driveway under the trees, and begin mark making and adding textures while the sounds of birds and the city blend into the background, the sun on her face and feel the earth and organic material beneath her hands and the canvas. Drawing on her emotions and surrounding inspiration, Helen paints from memory and follows her instincts, responding to what is in front of her, producing a sense or a feeling rather than a particular image.
Adding layers through paint, mark-making and collage, then removing by sanding, scraping or scratching the surface adds unique characteristics, vulnerabilities, depth and subtle curiosities to her work.
