Maliaka – Angel - Dassanech Tribe, Kenya
Dassanech girls are traditionally circumcised in a ‘Dimi’ ceremony at the very young age of eleven or twelve. If a girl isn’t circumcised she can’t marry and her father won't receive a dowry consisting of a certain amount of cattle. Cattle are central to the lives of the Dassanech and a prized possession of wealth, therefore, a father would have a direct interest in having his daughter go through the ordeal.
