Description

On April 5, 1971, in France, 343 filmmakers, writers, actresses, singers and philosophers ended a long held silence. "One milion women have abortions each year in France", they wrote in the magazine 'Nouvel Observateur' "I declare that I am one of them", they wrote, in a demand for open access to contraceptives and open abortion, a medical health procedure that, at the time, had been a crime since the Napoleon Bonaparte reign. The manifesto quickly cirqulated and caught the infamous name, 'Manifesto of the 343 sluts'. This manifesto was the pre-dating document to Roe v. Wade. This vesel is the reactive response to the 2022 overturn of Roe v. Wade in honour of the women who faught and are still fighting for equal human rights, for the right to basic medical care and the right to autonomy over their own bodies. The paper bag like vesel represents the inanimate object her body has become, disposable and crumbled. Her value is in her abbility to carry over the ability to care for what is put in her. Hand carved into the clay are the 343 names of the brave women who wrote the original manifesto. She is stained in iron oxide symbolising the blood spilled from women who were not given a choice. She is blood clay and tears - Manifesto 343
