Viva Magenta - The Colour of 2023

The Colour That Is Taking the World by Storm: Viva Magenta

It's that time of year again when Pantone, the world-famous colour expert, reveals its colour of the year for 2023. This year we are pleased to present Viva Magenta (also known as 18-1750). This vibrant pink hue is sure to bring a touch of energy and optimism to your wardrobe and home decor! Let's take a closer look at this bright and cheerful colour to see why it has become so popular.

What Is Viva Magenta?

Viva Magenta is an energetic shade with strong pink undertones.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, "Viva Magenta expresses our desire to move from the mundane to something more spirited."

Almost Certainly at Five by Helen Wiese

The new colour was chosen to give a sense of natural authenticity in a technological age. In particular, Viva Magenta is inspired by the cochineal red beetle: an insect native to Mexico and South America that has long been crushed and used as a red dye. The bright colour of this beetle has been used in everything from ancient dyeing techniques to modern candy and cosmetics.

The fact that Viva Magenta is so bold, joyful and inclusive means it could be an ideal inclusion for your home decor in 2023 and beyond.

What are Pantone colours?

Pantone colours have provided a way to communicate and match consistent colours since 1963, when the Pantone Color Institute developed the first standardised colour reproduction system known as the Pantone Matching System (PMS).

The Pantone Colour of the Year

Pantone released its first Colour of the Year in 2000, and every year since a new colour has been released to reflect current cultural trends. The selection process can take months of in-depth research. To choose each year’s colour, the Pantone Color Institute considers many aspects of society: from fashion to home décor, pop culture, technology and even politics. The Colour of the Year both anticipates and influences social trends. For example:

  • In 2020 the Colour of the Year was Classic Blue, offering a sense of dependability and reassurance in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • In 2021 there were two colours: solid, reliable Ultimate Gray and a vibrant yellow called Illuminating.
  • In 2022, a periwinkle blue called Very Peri was chosen to imbue creativity and cautious optimism.
  • And in 2023, Viva Magenta is set to bring with it a sense of joy, exuberance and wit.

Matching ideas

If you're looking for a bold, colourful look, consider pairing viva magenta with a yellow-orange hue for an eye-catching combination that is sure to turn heads wherever you go!

The key is to go for a fully saturated, rich yellow to match the viva magenta tone. Yellow and orange will stand out from viva magenta and draw the eye. It's a fun, vibrant mix that will brighten your home

White and gray. White goes well with all colours. The light and crispiness of white complement the boldness of Viva Magenta. You can also use light shades to pair with Viva Magenta, like shades of green or hues of blue.
