They were dangerous and beautiful temptresses who would sing and lure passing ships on to the rocks. In this painting you can see the shards of sunlight entering and dissipating in the depths of the water and feel the jiggle of her bottom as she kicks away. Perhaps she is thinking about luring her next victim.
