Mardi is a designer and abstract artist based in Sydney. After 20 years working as a designer, she has refocused on her passion for art and swapping pixels for the paintbrush.
Her job is very structured and precise and planned and she is rebelling against this in her abstract works by working directly onto the canvas, with little more in mind than a colour palette. It's intuitive and free and thrilling and the part of the process she loves the most.
She is inspired by the beauty of imperfection that she sees in everyday things. Cracked pavements, rusted house numbers, textured walls and ripped posters. She sees this as magic in the mundane and she aims to capture this in her work through colour, texture and layering. Her process involves addition and subtraction, layering acrylic paint with brushes and subtracting it again with any tool at hand. It's a process she repeats over and over until it feels right, then she adds finishing touches with graphite or pencil.
