Study on Paper No. 1
My paintings come from loose affiliations of imagery and music running through my head. In my paintings, I am trying to express those images and sounds in a way that leaves the viewer to their own deeply personal reflection.
I am compelled by the dichotomy of geometry and spontaneity. Form, line and perspective need to come together; whether in abstract or more conventional expression. This is challenged by my spontaneous approach to the canvas. My paintings are seldom planned out. But, every brushstroke must end up in the right place on the canvas.
I am fascinated with colour. The relationships and interplay of colours determine the visual perception and human response.
My hope is that my paintings invoke a response that allows the viewer to momentarily be elsewhere in their mind.
About Simon Grant
Simon is a Sydney based artist who has a love of the Australian landscape, the sea and sailing, and abstract expression. What started many years ago as doodling with his children’s crayons has turned into an obsessive pursuit.
Simon’s love of painting was initially inspired by the Australian greats; notably Roberts, Streeton, and Fred Williams.
More recently has been a drive to explore abstract painting; inspiration and influence coming particularly from the abstract expressionists.
Simon is a great admirer of the Korean Dansaekwha movement and is drawn to the Korean aesthetic.
Simon also paints sailing seascapes; a theme borne from a youth spent by the sea.
